Emailing "Monopoly Rules"
Susan Crawford, [writing](http://scrawford.net/blog/it-costs-more/1203/) from Ann Arbor Michigan, where she's teaching now, points out that the cable and phone companies are afraid of the internet.
For phone, the internet is cheaper, and for cable, the internet provides free alternatives.
You cannot trust these companies to deploy, but you can be sure they'll force you to buy something you don't want to get the internet you need. That's why the price of pure internet is higher than the price of internet + phone or cable TV.
You can also be sure they'll fight anyone selling pure internet.
"Of course the existing incumbents don’t want to see government intervention in internet access services - even though government intervention and the creation of a whole host of policies and subsidies supporting broad internet access brought the internet into widespread use in this country."
