MailTones for iPhone from Electric Pocket is an app that allows you to change the e-mail alert tone on the iPhone for each contact in your Address Book. It has just been updated.

The idea behind MailTones is to make it easier for users to distinguish between high and lower priority messages. So, with MailTones ($2.99, available here), iPhoners can set a tone for a specific user, or one for all incoming messages from a specific domain. It can also filter and provide custom tones for messages which include specific words in the Subject line. The application comes with a collection of tones ranging from discrete bells to more horns and buzzers.

According to Electric Pocket, it was hearing from a lot of IT people and other types of professionals who need to be able to respond quickly to a support call at all hours of the night. Those users had the idea to forward their pagers through MailTones so they would know by the sound of the tone that the message was a high priority.

The key thing to remember about MailTones and how it uses the iPhone's push notification capabilities is that people can use it to be alerted to important mail they otherwise might miss. As a result, to further support the type of user mentioned in the previous paragraph, the developer's added a new extra-loud-and-long "alarm" tone in the most recent update. That way they can hear when an important message arrives even when they're asleep.
