Emailing "Not Green? You're Fired!"
ZDNet Australia has an interesting
article about data center greening and where it stands today.
The piece alludes to risking your employment by not adopting green technologies. And it's not necessarily about exhibiting anti-treehugging tendencies. Rather, you might be putting your job in jeopardy by squandering your organization's money and hampering its business prospects.
Why? Because CIO's and IT managers have made efficient IT a priority.
But before your workers attempt to run out and virtualize everything, make sure you're aware of the pitfalls.
Alex Serpo writes:
While datacentre virtualisation is growing in popularity, virtualisation scenarios aren't quite as rosy as Chu paints them. Kris Kumar, MD of Sydney-based datacentre design specialists 3iGroup, describes virtualisation as the "silent enemy".
Kumar describes a scenario in which a virtualised server moved from performing at 10 to 20 percent of its capacity to more than 80 percent capacity.
"In real power terms, a 300 Watt server which was running at 20 Watts is actually now running at 280 Watts. You are reducing the footprint but putting in more processing power, so the power per footprint has gone up," Kumar said.
That's something you rarely hear about but is important to consider when mulling P2V consolidation projects. Then again, today's multi-core server chips are vastly more efficient (on a processing power per watt basis) than those of even a couple of years ago, so be sure to factor that into your plans as well.
